Commonly found species of marine fish in the Karnataka Coast are Indian Mackerel, seer, sardines shark, tuna, Skates and Rays, Pomfrets, crabs, Prawns, Squides etc., Esuarine fishes- lady fish, mullets, etc.

Commonly found species of inland fish are Cat fish, common carp, silver carp, grass carp, major and minor carps, murrels, gambusia, tilapia, mahseer etc. 

At the field level the Department is headed by the Director of Fisheries.
