​For the first time in 2009-10, Hon'ble Chief Minister in para 95 of the budget speech had announced that an University will be established for the development of Ayurvedic Medical Sciences.  The allocation in the budget was made under the capital head from 2010-11 onwards.

​​​Ayush department has got requests from various elected representatives at different points of time to set up Ayurveda University at Tumkur, Bellary,Shimoga, Nippani, Gokak etc.
Presently Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences is affilliating the Ayurveda Medical Colleges in the state along with Medical Colleges for Homoeopathy, Unani, Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences.

In order to regulate higher education in Indian Medicine comprising Ayurveda and Unani under the Central Council of Indian Medicine and Homoeopathy under the Central Council of Homoeopathy within the frame of University Grants Commission it is felt that an university to impart higher education in all the transhealth streams under the Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy) is necessary in the state.   ​
