Hard worker, team player, sincere and transparent, Former Deputy Chief Minister and Congress leader, Sri Siddaramaiah was born on 12th August 1948 at Siddaramanahundi, a village in Varuna Hobli of Mysore district. Sri Siddaramaiah hails from a poor farming community. Coming from a rural family, Sri Siddaramaiah is the maiden sophomore of his family who graduated from Mysore University with B.Sc. degree later completed Law degree from the same University and pursued it as a profession for some time with his practice and teaching.
Sri Siddaramaiah as an eloquent speaker in his student days was known for his eloquence and oratory power. His early life was influenced by Socialism advocated by Dr. Ram Monohar Lohia. To explore more meaningful and effective avenues to achieve social justice for the downtrodden and the weaker sections of the society, he bade adieu to his law pursuits and entered the political field.
Contesting on Loka Dal Party, he entered the 7th Karnataka Legislative Assembly as its member in 1983 from Chamundeshwari Constituency in Mysore district. Later, he joined the ruling Janata Party. He was the first President of Kannada Watchdog Committee (Kannada Kavalu Samiti) set up to supervise the implementation of Kannada as an official language. He worked assiduously for the enrichment of Kannada language and Culture. Later, he became the State Minister for Sericulture and was instrumental in the all round development of Sericulture Department and Silk Industry in the State.
During the mid-term poll in 1985, Sri Siddaramaiah was re-elected from the same Constituency for the 8th Karnataka Legislative Assembly. He became the Minister for Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, which he served with remarkable agility and distinction. People still recall the implementation of innovative programmes and policies as a Minister for Transport.
Sri. Siddaramaiah undoubtedly, is a leader of the masses. He is popular among all sections of the society in general and a symbol of hope for the backward class in particular.
He won again in the 1994 elections to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from the Chamundeshwari constituency. Again, the intensity of his hard work came to the fore when he became the Minister for Finance, which displayed his unswerving love for the people of Karnataka. He filled the coffers of the state, repaid the debts of previous Governments and the State never again went for an overdraft for successive years. It was an amazing feat by any standards. He pooled effectively the resources for development activities. In fact, M/s CRISIL, a leading independent credit rating company, in its report had placed Karnataka as a state with sound financial position in the country.
Sri Siddaramaiah has always proved himself to be a pioneering and a visionary leader with a clear self made mandate for a prosperous Karnataka. In August 2004, Assembly Election again he was adorned with a responsibility of being the Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka together with finance portfolio. He strived for better economic growth and improvement of the revenue in tax system and excise through his initiatives of plugging the leakages. All his budgets were appreciated by all classes of people of the state as well as the central economists. He was instrumental in introducing the VAT in the state.
After conducting three “AHINDA” conventions, he quit JD(S) in 2005. After an offer by the Congress Party, he joined with his followers in 2006. A new chapter in his political life began with the joining of the Congress Party. In December 2007 he faced the election in Chamundeshwari Constituency and won the election.
Congress Party appointed him Chairman of the KPCC Publicity Committee of Elections in 2008. Later he was appointed as the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly.
He toured all over Karnataka in addition to his Padayatra from Bangalore to Bellary in protest against illegal mining. He revived Congress Party in a systematic manner in view of Karnataka State Legislative Assembly Elections 2013. He took the initiative of developing leadership within the Congress Party and took into confidence the grass-root level leaders and assisted them in working for the party at various levels much ahead of the Assembly Elections.
The Congress Party has won 121 seats with a comfortable majority to form the new government on its own in the state after a gap of 9 years.Sri Siddaramaiah is a straight forward, transparent and efficient financial management expert who has presented seven successful budgets. Sri Siddaramaiah is an asset to the Congress Party and the state.
At the personal front, Sri Siddaramaiah lives with his wife and two sons forming a happy and loving family.
