​A task force constituted by the planning commission of the Govt of India in the early 1970's brought to light the immense potentiality of the science museums/ centres for creating Science awareness and scientific temper among the people. The Science museums / centres were developed in three levels- National, Regional and Sub Regional levels and these were setup in different parts of the country particularly to serve the rural populace.

The District Sub- Regional Science Centre, Bellary was established by Karnataka Science and Technology Promotion Society (KSTePS), an autonomous organisation under the Depertment of IT, BT and S&T, Govt. of Karnataka in the vast Nallacheruvu area covering about 12 acres of land of the Bellary City is the wonderful endeavour of the District Administration.   ​​
