World Health Organization(WHO) currently recommends two dose of measles vaccine under Routine Immunization.

The Universal Immunization Programme(UIP) of the Government of India(GoI) had included one dose of measles vaccine between 9-12 months of age since 1985. The overall coverage with one dose of measles vaccine has been 69% according to DLHS-3 Coverage survey with wide variation between state(47% to 99%).

From 2010, based on recommendations from National Technical Advisory Group-India(NTAGI) GoI has decided to introduce a second dose of measles vaccine in the UIP through state specific strategies based on evaluated coverage of 1st dose of measles vaccine.
