The Institute is established in the year 1981 under the World Bank assisted Karnataka Sericulture Project as an autonomous, non-commercial, non-profit making, an applied Research and Development Institute, registered under Karnataka Societies Registration Act, 1960 (No.10/81-82 dt. 10.4.1981, MOA-No. CI-166/SLP/80/Bangalore Dated 7.3.1981) with the main object of addressing R & D aspects of the Department of Sericulture, GOK, with special emphasis to the field problems. The Institute has been established with adequate infrastructure facilities, well equipped laboratories, sophisticated equipment and qualified scientists. The Institute is conducting research on all aspects of sericulture right from soil to fabric besides the by-products.

  • To conduct applied and basic research on Mulberry, Silkworm and Post Cocoon disciplines.
  • Mulberry and silkworm genetic resource conservation, breeding, race maintenance, evaluation and popularization.
  • Mulberry, silkworm disease and pest incidence - surveillance, monitoring and advisory services.
  • To identify research priorities in collaboration with Department of Sericulture, Govt. of Karnataka and the sericulture farmers and reelers.
  • To develop cost effective technologies to economize resources and to increase production, productivity and quality (raw material/human/energy/water)
  • To optimize utilization of by-products in sericulture industry.
  • On-farm trials/demonstrations/farmer field schools to evaluate, validate and popularization of technologies.
  • Patenting, licensing, commercialization and quality control of the technologies/products developed by the institute.
  • Testing, fine tuning and certification of products developed by other agencies and their quality control.
  • Education, training, capacity building in all branches of sericulture inclusive of Seminars and workshops.
  • To provide technical support in formulating sericultural policies of the state and other consultancy services.
  • Collaboration with CSB, other central sericultural research institutes and other premier institutions, Universities, industry and reputed NGOS in the areas of sericultural R & D.
  • To undertake policy research and program evaluation for DOSK, rural development and other agencies.
  • To seek financial assistance and to receive donations and grants from the state/central government and other external funding agencies.
